It does make sense that helicopters should crash more often due to mechanical problems when they fly in combat zones. A bullet cutting your fuel line or unbalancing your turbine is certainly a serious mechanical problem. But isn’t it bad propaganda to blame uncertain cases on your own poor maintenance work? Do you want your enemies to think you’re incompetent?

It’s now said to have been a secret stealth helicopter, but it fits a pattern of early reports of crashes in Afghanistan too.
