The role of politics is to minimize the overlap between the set of things that might help (more funding for research on mathematically secure software and the social psychology of security behavior) and the set of things that occur (diplomatic posturing, millions of blog posts). The role of economics is to ensure some progress anyway, and to provide a good source of excuses for the millions of blog posts.
