Severe risks come with unpredictable change to the social order, but AI poses no direct risk in itself. AI technology is like knives: Knife technology is valuable, but there is the problem of ill-doers who use knives, including the specialized war-knives called swords. We humans have watched enough science fiction movies, and we won't make a machine we can't control. We don't control other humans. But we could use AI for that, if we accept the risk.

This is the "guns don't kill people" argument. But people sure make a lot of guns. They must have a reason.
