One day, as I popped into the ergosphere of a black hole to grab some ergs--plenty of ergs to be had there, y'know--I started to wonder. What did people do before they could convert mass to energy on a large scale? Did they have to buy their acceleration from an acceleration factory? Why, they might go anywhere, not just where the mass stations are. Everyone would be confused all the time, with no way to organize their journeys!
