Nobody knows much, but everybody knows more than they think. Can you explain how to walk, or how to see? No, even if you can do those things. Expert system research starting in the 1970s found that experts can't tell you their knowledge, they can only use it. Split brain experiments prove that people don't explain themselves, but confabulate explanations. I don't know why we're so set on understanding large language models. They're already more transparent than humans.
