A historic event is one that you've gotten over, like a hill, and coasted to the bottom of. But that doesn't happen. Events are bottomless and always ready to play with your emotions; you can't get to the bottom of them. And like a bad date, you usually don't want to. It's true even of historic events we have good dates for.
