On February 24, the Western world was reminded that hard power is not a pillow fight. It is worse than mayhem, at least julyhem. There is no mechanism to cancel the memorandum of disagreement, and the movers and shakers have banded together against the economy of the shovers and takers. In the face of shortages unseen since the Sulfur Crisis of 1840, we slowly learn that enemies go together like ice floes and lava flows. In time, we may perhaps discover that the fog of war is neither cool nor humid.
