16 January 2021 - demagogue

It is only when things are already off the rails that a demagogue can be elected. The demagogue will set the train on fire and try to organize a march back to mythical place in the past. I did not fear for American democracy; it is deeply legitimate as the core of the American self-image. I should have feared more, but in a way I was right. Even the Last Trumps, as they act to bring on the end time, believe that they are defending democracy.
