In London once stood a medieval church named St. Nicholas Shambles, named after the Shambles, a district of butchers. An Elizabethan record is explicit about the connection with butchers, calling it “St. Nicholas, in the Flesh Shambles.” To the modern mind, more informed and with an abhorrence of commas, the implication is clear: Santa Claus is a zombie.
