Every big idea is, like a geodesic dome, supported by a framework of smaller ideas, each of which must be attached in the correct place. Then we give the idea a pithy name, like “evolution”, summarize it in a slogan like “variation and natural selection,” and forget how complex it is. That makes ignorance inevitable and progress possible.
