13 April 2018 - kabad idea

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Why do languages come with such large vocabularies? Imagine how much easier it would be to learn English if we dropped all the synonyms whose only purpose is to add color. For example, most of the four-letter curse words, and their set phrases, mean “bad”, or sometimes a little more specifically “this is bad” or “you are bad.” Of course color is valuable, so we can replace them with, say, the color prefix “ka-” that makes any content word colorful. “What a kabad idea!” you may think—then your preconceptions will go kaboom.
