Judging by reviews, a novel is supposed to be like the gunpowder in a gun, both explosive and propulsive. For the thing to work, the reader’s mind must then be like the firing chamber—you didn’t realize that you were being reviewed alongside the book. Luckily, the reviewer provides the barrel to throw it into when you’re done.
