If Trade Warrior Trump wants to restrict trade with China, I know a simpler method than imposing tariffs on America’s neighbors and allies: Recognize Taiwan. Fake “national security” excuses threaten international norms, but diplomatic recognition is fine except for China’s reaction. If it destabilizes great power relations and increases the risk of war, well, that will be another accomplishment that Trump will be proud to call his own.
