31 October 2017 - aging is inevitable

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Inexplicably missing April Fool’s Day but just in time for Halloween, Nelson and Masel of the University of Arizona have published a scientific paper claiming that aging is mathematically inevitable in multicellular organisms, due to competition between cells. It truly is a frightening demonstration that, if you start with the wrong assumptions, you can prove anything.

clue:

The idea is not entirely new. The new claim is the proof.

The paper makes less extreme claims, but the official press release gives climate deniers a run for their money. The genuine proof that death is inevitable is that entropy increases.

give me a clue so sweet and true
