1 July 2011 - Convention on Disarmament

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Disarming the U.N.

Now that North Korea is in charge of disarmament at the United Nations, a chair that matches any decor, we should remind ourselves that the UN is quite good at one aspect of its great mission, providing top cover to powerful nations through the Security Council so that they can do as they will without troubling their consciences. As a matter of fairness, those who are not powerful need their self-important positions. After all, the larger the organization the less nearly you can call it that, and the world is the largest organization of all, so taking any real action would only add to the chaos. Right?

clue:

North Korea is this month’s chair of the UN Conference on Disarmament, which is nominally about arms control but doesn’t need North Korea’s help to be seen as a joke.

give me a clue so sweet and true
