I watched my computer apply software updates today. First it said “preparing cups” then “preparing empathy”, and I felt I almost knew what it was doing. Then it added “preparing gnome-user-guide” and I could only wonder who it was going to go drinking with. But then again, maybe that’s why progress bars move so unpredictably: Computers like to visit the elf kingdom under the hill, where time passes oddly.
