To primitives like us, the universe looks big and interesting, with lots of rocks to poke under. But imagine the viewpoint of an advanced civilization—hemmed in on one side by increasing entropy, and on the other by sparse raw materials disappearing behind the light cone as the universe expands. It’s the horror cliche spiked room. No wonder they all left!

“There’s a better place to be” is not a common explanation of the Fermi Paradox (“where are they?”). I don’t know why not.
