DirecTV has shown the path: Legal threats with slight backing can extort money even from the innocent. The next step is to remove the slight backing and call it a business model. Now there’s the way to put the Nigerian spam scammers out of business—do the same thing better.

DirecTV is suing people who bought smart card programmers which can be used to pirate satellite TV, and they aren’t bothering to collect evidence on what the devices were actually used for.
