7 May 2001 - Cinco de Mayo

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Shall I Compare Thee to a Holiday?

Cartoonist Day is also a Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo. Let’s compare:

“Cartoon” is named after cheap stuff to sketch on; Cinco de Mayo is the date of a battle victory in a war that Mexico lost. Cartoonist sounds like some kind of auto mechanic; Cinco de Mayo sounds like a kitchen sink full of mayonnaise. Cartoonists have funny threadbare drawings and funny threadbare clothes; Mexico has jumping beans and a state oil company named Pemex.

I’m sorry, artists. You may be in more newspapers, but Cinco de Mayo is funnier.
