23 April 2001 - globalization

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

The globalization protesters in Quebec City are near the mark. Free trade will make the world richer, and that will certainly harm the environment. The extra jobs created will entice poor workers to order from the Sharper Image catalog, causing further deterioration in their standard of living.

But let’s be serious for a moment. Fighting against a trade pact won’t help much in the long run; at best it will slow economic growth slightly. To bring about major changes, we’ll have to lower the world population. The plan here should be twofold: first, to outlaw agriculture, the most environmentally damaging industry; second, to legalize cannibalism.
