10 April 2001 - classical simile

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Why Oh Why Don’t People Still Write This Way?

As when the fisher, lost in the wine-dark wine,
Misses the slow-upcreeping siren song
Until, with a piercing note (reminding him
Of when the mermaid tangled in the nets
At last came free, and with a final fillip,
Flinging the foam full into his face,
Vanished into the deeps), the catchy number
Sets its hook—so with a fatal jerk
Ends the classical simile.
