The MacArthur Foundation avoids the problems of the Nobel Prize by handing out its MacArthur “genius” awards to scientists, artists and social activists who are both original and relentlessly productive.

The problem here is that one who has the potential to become a MacArthur Fellow is generally so energetic, so resourceful, and so goal-driven that mere lack of recognition or of money is unlikely to slow them down.
