I saw a NASA inspirational poster which showed an astronaut lifted up to an abstract sky in the palm of a heroic hand. The first phrase that came to mind was “socialist realism”.

There was nothing realistic about it. The style was socialist surrealism.

Socialist realism is a school of art that was promulgated by the government of the late Soviet Union. You know, the brave peasant stands tall with his sickle, looking toward the horizon.
